Like most boys in the early 1950's I started with a basic train set, bought second-hand. In my case it was Hornby Dublo and consisted of an oval of track with a couple of sidings. It fitted onto the dining table and was returned to it's box at the end of each day. I had a tank loco, a couple of coaches and 4 or 5 wagons. I relied on birthday and christmas presents and pocket money to expand it. It soon out grew the dining table and eventually I was allowed to build a permanent layout in an underused outbuilding.
