Temsfield

N gauge British

(diesel era from Blue to present day)

TEMSFIELD has been created by the conversion of Yucca Springs
from Southern California desert to rural Britain.
Below is a short sequence of how the conversion progressed over a period of several months.

A tour of Temsfield

The tunnel end was a straightforward conversion. After removing the many small bushes so common in Southern California, all that needed doing was a covering of various makes and shades of flock powders. This was then covered with a variety of static grasses from the WW SCENICS range. I purchased their applicator, glues and assorted "grasses" and found it an easy way to create the basic scenery. If you make any mistakes or need to change anything all you need to do is go over the area again until it looks right. This way you can create all types of realistic terrain. The trees were mainly salvaged from a previous layout. They are made from privet hedge cuttings covered in WOODLAND SCENICS foliage. Hedges are mainly made from WOODLAND SCENICS clump foliage together with assorted litchen from the scrap box.

The river bridge section was another simple conversion. The bridge and the river were already in place so all that was required was flock powder, static grass and the "planting" of yet more trees and bushes. (you can never have too many trees). The river itself is varnish over a dirt coloured base with a few rocks (WOODLAND SCENICS tallus) to break it up. The bridge sides are PECO plate girders. I found some fencing in the scrap box which was either salvaged from a previous layout or just plain leftovers, and these were positioned in amongst the hedges.

Nothing much different here from the previous two areas other than giving the shallow cutting an earthy colour in place of the very light sandy colour of Yucca Springs.

A small shed has been added in this field. It is made from part of the body of a very ancient Graham Farish suburban coach - courtesy of the scrap box. The intention is to add a couple of horses and some jumps to bring it to life.

A farm now occupies the site of a plot of land on Yucca Springs that was under development. All the farm buildings are from the KESTREL range of kits, built virtually as intended. One of the buildings is a stable block, hence the use of the adjoining field to exercise the horses over the jumps. The lane leading to the farm was already there to serve the modern industrial unit next to the farm and which has been retained without alteration.

Across the tracks and opposite the farm was the site of the "caboose motel" on Yucca Springs. This could not survive the conversion and has been turned into a holiday park for rail enthusiasts. The static caravans at the rear are 3d printed kits from DAPR. The scrap box yielded a set of old POLA houses under construction, so after suitably turning the area into something resembling a ploughed field they were embedded into the "mess". The addition of a storage container (yet another scrap box resident), skips, a couple of portaloos, workmen's vehicles and general clutter, it has now become - a building site. Still needs more work in this area in the future.

The main alteration here is the removal of the rail crossing and the fitting of security fencing and concrete barriers. The industrial unit (PIKESTUFF kit) is unchanged and the restaurant building in the background (KATO ready built structure) has lost it's original name sign. Whether it remains as a restaurant or becomes something else has not been decided.

Apart from the usual addition of yet more trees, hedges and grass very little has changed here. The ATLAS ready built petrol station has lost it's EXXON sign and is now no more than a car repair building.

Apart from adding yet more trees etc. the palm trees in the care home have been replaced with large bushes. The care home buildings are Graham Farish SCENECRAFT office buildings whilst the bungalow is another ATLAS building.

That concludes the tour of Temsfield and it's conversion from Yucca Springs
